Are you interested in obtaining your first SIA licence? Our comprehensive guide outlines the step-by-step process, ensuring you have all the necessary information to successfully apply for an SIA licence and kick-start your career in the private security sector.

Introduction to the SIA:
Begin by acquainting yourself with the Security Industry Authority (SIA), the regulatory body overseeing the UK’s private security sector. The SIA has a dual role: licensing individuals engaged in specific security activities and managing the Approved Contractor Scheme, which assesses private security suppliers against independent criteria. The SIA was established to ensure public safety by preventing unsuitable individuals from holding positions in the sector.
Eligibility and Requirements:
Before you apply, ensure you meet the eligibility criteria:
- Be at least 18 years old
- Successfully complete an ID verification process
- Pass a criminal records check
- Possess eligibility to work in the UK
Each application is reviewed individually, meaning having a criminal record or immigration-related issues doesn’t necessarily disqualify you.
Selecting the Right Licence Type:
Determine the security role you’re aiming for and choose the appropriate licence type. Options include Security Guarding, Door Supervision, Public Surveillance Using CCTV, and more.
Role-Specific Training:
Depending on your chosen security role, undertake the required training:
- Door Supervisor Training
- Security Guard Training
- CCTV Training
- Close Protection Training
Submitting the Application:
Register: Create a personal online account using your details, email address, and chosen username and password. Activate your account through the confirmation email.
Log In: Access your account on the self-service website and provide the requested information, matching the details required for the chosen licence.
Application Submission: Once logged in, navigate to the ‘My Application’ tab, then select ‘Start a New Application’ and ‘Apply for youself’. Fill out sections 1-9 of the application form and review your submission before sending it.
Next Steps: After completing these sections, you’ll receive an email outlining the next steps. You can pay the application fee online or at a post office. If your photo has expired (photos last 8 years and 8 months), you’ll need to visit a post office for a new photograph.
Checks in Progress: The SIA will conduct checks on your criminal record and right to work in the UK, as well as assess the acceptability of your photo. Promptly respond to any related emails to expedite your application processing.
Decision and Confirmation: A successful application results in a granted letter and your licence card within 14 days. Once you receive this confirmation, you’re legally allowed to work in your chosen security role.
Application Rejection: If your application is rejected, the SIA will provide reasons. You have 21 days from the decision letter to respond with any necessary clarifications.
SIA Licence Revocation and Suspension:
Familiarize yourself with the possibility of licence revocation or suspension due to issues such as fraudulent documents, improper use, false qualifications, relevant convictions, training refusal, or perceived unsuitability. Responding within the designated time frame is crucial to address such situations.
By following these steps, you’ll navigate the process smoothly, ensuring a strong start to your career in the private security sector.
Remember, maintaining a valid SIA licence is essential for a successful and compliant career in the industry.
